Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for an internal combustion engine capable of reducing weight of the piston, and reducing frictional force between the piston and a cylinder, while securing desired strength.SOLUTION: A piston (1) of an internal combustion engine includes a piston head (2), a thrust-side skirt (3) and an anti-thrust-side skirt (4), and a pair of connection walls (5, 5) connecting opposed side ends of both skirts. In a cross-sectional view, the anti-thrust-side skirt has a peripheral length longer than the thrust-side skirt, and the pair of connection walls have rigidity lower than that of a thrust-side part (10), at an anti-thrust-side part (11). Since the thrust-side requiring high strength can improve its strength according to its shape, weight of the piston can be reduced by thinning its wall thickness. Further since the anti-thrust-side is deformed due to its low rigidity, a force between the piston and the cylinder generated by thermal expansion and a side pressure becomes small, and the frictional force is reduced.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
