PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy in an internal combustion engine that injects water into the cylinder thereof.SOLUTION: When a water injection valve injects water into the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, the water injection is executed during a compression stroke when an engine load of the internal combustion engine is equal to or lower than a predetermined load, while the water injection is executed during an inspiration stroke when the engine load of the internal combustion engine is higher than the predetermined load.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
