Title:
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH ROCKING CYLINDER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5297008
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
Engine has a conventional crankcase and crankshaft layout, however the outside of the cylinder block (10) is basically cylindrical, and it is mounted on horizontal shafts (9) parallel with the crankshaft so that it can oscillate on an appropriately shaped upper surface of the crankcase, with which it makes a gastight joint. Arrangement allows the connecting rod (4) to be fixed perpendicular into the piston (3); a gland (8) in the cylinder block makes the chamber under the piston gastight. The combustion chamber (12) may be fitted with a conventional ignition device (17), and the combustible mixture enters it via a transfer port (14) in the block, this being wide enough to bridge the piston. This port, in conjunction with an inlet opening in the crankcase wall (16), also allows the mixture to be drawn into the chamber under the piston where it is pre-compressed. An outlet port (13) in the block which can communicate with a second opening (15) in the crankcase wall connects the combustion chamber to atm. for discharge of burnt mixture.
