Abstract:

To prevent the air-fuel ratio from becoming rich and to reduce the quantity of NOx and particulate matters even when an EGR device is combined with an internal combustion engine with a combustion-type heater of a combustion gas-introducing type into an air intake system.

This internal combustion engine is provided in its air intake system with a combustion-type heater 17, and the combustion gas discharged from the combustion-type heater 17 is introduced into a main stream pipe 29 to heat up the cooling water with the combustion heat of the combustion gas, thereby enhancing both engine warming-up performance and the performance of a compartment heater 9. The internal combustion engine is also provided with an EGR device 88 as well as a recirculated-gas-quantity controller 46 for controlling the quantity of the EGR gas recirculated by the EGR device 88, in correspondence to the quantity of the combustion gas introduced into the main stream pipe 29. When the combustion-type heater 17 is in operation, the EGR device 88 is stopped.
