A particulate collection device 18 bearing NOx absorbent is arranged in an engine exhaust air passage. Thereafter, an average air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5 is temporarily made rich at the time of raising temperature of the particulate collection device 18 to temperature at which particulates burn.
