Abstract:

To speedily raise temperature of a particulate collection device to temperature at which particulates burn at the time of burning the articulates.

First combustion at which EGR gas quantity in a combustion chamber 5 is more than EGR gas quantity where soot production quantity peaks and soot is hardly produced and second combustion at which the EGR gas quantity in the combustion chamber 5 is less than the EGR gas quantity where the soot production quantity peaks are selectively carried out. A particulate collection device 18 bearing NOx absorbent is arranged in an engine exhaust air passage. Thereafter, an average air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5 is temporarily made rich at the time of raising temperature of the particulate collection device 18 to temperature at which particulates burn.
