To provide an internal combustion engine that a variable volume device having a cylindrical part and a moving member which moves in the cylindrical part, and estimates an amount of a lubricant arranged in the variable volume device.
The internal combustion engine includes: the variable volume device which has the cylindrical part communicating to a combustion chamber and the moving member arranged in the cylindrical part so as to be movable; and a lubricant supply device which supplies the lubricant to a sliding portion between the cylindrical part and the moving member. The internal combustion engine detects a pressure change of a gas chamber during a stop of the moving member in the cylindrical part, and estimates the amount of the lubricant maintained at the sliding portion between the cylindrical part and the moving member on the basis of the pressure change of the gas chamber.
