To provide an internal combustion engine including a moving member for moving in response to pressure of a combustion chamber, and restraining noise generated in response to the movement of the moving member.
This internal combustion engine includes a volume variable device for changing the volume of an auxiliary chamber communicating with the combustion chamber by contracting a spring device, with a pressure change in the combustion chamber 5 as a driving source, when the pressure of the combustion chamber reaches control pressure. The volume variable device includes a piston 55 for the auxiliary chamber for moving when the pressure of the combustion chamber reaches the control pressure, a locking part 52 for locking the piston 55 for the auxiliary chamber, and a braking device for reducing a moving speed of the piston 55 for the auxiliary chamber. The braking device is formed so that braking force when the piston 55 for the auxiliary chamber ought to contact with the locking part 52, becomes larger than braking force when the piston 55 for the auxiliary chamber starts to move from a state of being locked on the locking part 52.
