To provide technology for changing the concentration distribution of EGR gas in cylinders of an internal combustion engine.
The internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust gas introduction hole 15 for introducing only part of exhaust gas into the cylinders 2 of the internal combustion engine 1 to set the direction of the exhaust gas flowing thereinto so that the exhaust gas introduced into the cylinders 2 has predetermined concentration distribution. Differently from EGR that intake air and the exhaust gas being mixed are introduced into the cylinders 2, the exhaust gas is introduced directly into the cylinders 2 to form the exhaust gas with high and low concentration portions as a result of of less mixture of intake air and the exhaust gas. The formation of this concentration distribution of the exhaust gas permits an intentional change in the ignition timing and combustion speed of the mixture.
