Abstract:
An internal combustion engine (23) includes: a crankcase (24) that supports a crankshaft (33) rotatably about a rotational axis (28); a cylinder block (25) connected with the crankcase (24) and including at least one pair of cylinders (42a) that sandwich a valve chamber (45) therebetween in an axial direction of the crankshaft (33), the valve chamber (45) housing therein a valve actuating mechanism (48) that connects a camshaft (49) to the crankshaft (33); a detected member (78) disposed between crank pins (38) corresponding to the pair of cylinders (42a), the detected member (78) rotating integrally with the crankshaft (33); and a detection sensor (83) disposed to face a trajectory of the detected member (78) and generating a pulse signal in accordance with movement of the detected member (78). Accordingly, the internal combustion engine (23) can avoid displacement of a nearby part and enlargement of the crankcase (24) as much as possible, while allowing the detected member (78) to be increased in size.
