To detect a cylinder attached with a different kind of an ignition plug having no countermeasure for spike noise or an ignition plug failure cylinder in an ion current detection device of a specification that the ignition plug corresponding to the spike noise is used.
In the ion current detection device, the number of the generation of the spike noise is counted by analyzing a variation pattern of the ion current detected in a spike noise detection section including a combustion stroke through the ignition plug, it is determined that it is a spike noise abnormality cycle by the fact that whether or not the number of generation of the spike noise in the spike noise detection section is a predetermined value or larger. Furthermore, the number of ignition and the number of the generation of the spike noise abnormality cycle are counted in each cylinder and a frequency of the generation of the spike noise abnormality cycle is calculated in each cylinder. The cylinder in which the frequency of the generation of the spike noise abnormality cycle reaches a determination threshold or higher is determined as the cylinder attached with the different kind of the ignition plug having no countermeasure for spike noise or the ignition plug failure cylinder.
