To provide an ion generator with an improved life.
It comprises an inducing electrode 5 formed on a substrate 3 made of a nonconductor, a dielectric layer 7 covering the induction electrode 5 on the substrate 3, an ion generating electrode 9 formed on the dielectric layer 7 and a protection layer 11 to cover at least the ion generating electrode 9. On the protection layer 11 is formed a power removal means, namely a groove section 19, the width thereof being smaller than the ion generating electrode and the bottom thereof being the center section of the surface of the ion generating electrode. In this structure electric charge of ion attached to the protection layer 11 is absorbed and removed by the power removal means 19 and there is no electrification and accumulation of electric charge on the surface of the protection layer 11, thereby breakdown of the protection layer 11 being prevented, which means an improved life of the ion generator 1.
