During black display, the liquid crystal molecule of the nematic liquid crystal material is aligned in parallel to surfaces of the pair of substrates, the slow axes of the first retardation region and the second retardation region are orthogonal to each other, the first retardation region has an Re (550) of 20 nm or less and has an Rth (550) of 20 nm to 120 nm, the second retardation region includes a retardation layer containing a vertically aligned discotic liquid crystal compound.
