To provide an iris image pickup apparatus which is low in cost and is used to photograph iris images with good accuracy.
A telephotographic camera 22 and a range finding sensor 24 are mounted on a vertically inclining link base 20. A mirror 23 for panning and the range finding sensor 24 can be inclined in the lateral direction by a motor 26 for panning and a link mechanism 27. The image pickup direction of the telephotographic camera 22 is reflected by the mirror 23 for panning and on the other hand, since the range finding sensor 24 is given the turning angle of double the turning angle of the mirror 23 for panning by the link mechanism 27, the range finding direction and the image pickup direction are aligned and the high-accuracy range finding is made possible. A wide angle camera 25 can be thereby made one and the manufacturing cost of the iris image pickup apparatus 10 is reduced. Since the range finding sensor 24 is mounted on the tilting base 20 and the range finding is carried out while the sensor is vertically inclined, the distance measurable range up to a subject is vertically widened.
