To provide an iron-based sintered friction member containing iron or its alloy as a main component, considering environmental protection, without using a PRTR code specified chemical substance at all, and also to provide a railroad vehicle brake block using the same, and their manufacturing method.
The sintered friction member 10 containing iron or its alloy as a main component comprises: a first layer 11 formed by sintering material powder superior in friction characteristics; a second layer 12 formed by sintering material powder superior in adhesive characteristics, and a third layer 13 formed by sintering material powder superior in reinforcing characteristics. Each layer of the sintered friction member 10 contains iron or its alloy as the main component without using the PRTR code specified chemical substance at all, therefore, it is advantageous in environmental protection. The friction material is an iron-based material and the third layer 13 as a reinforcing plate is of an iron-based material, thus eliminating plating required when joining heterogeneous metals such as copper with iron.
