To provide an isocamphylguaiacyl carbonate used as a raw material for preparing trans-3-isocamphylcyclohexanol which is useful as a component of perfume having a sandalwood-like fragrance, to provide a method for preparing the isocamphylguaiacyl carbonate with high selectivity, and to provide a method for preparing the trans-3-isocamphylcyclohexanol by the use of the same carbonate.
A compound of the isocamphylguaiacyl carbonate of formula (I) (R1 is an isocamphyl group located at 2- or 4-position of the OCH3 group; and R2 is a 1-6C alkyl). The isocamphylguaiacyl carbonate of formula (I) is obtained by reacting a methoxyphenylaklyl carbonate with a camphenene compound in the presence of an acid catalyst. The trans-3-isocamphylcyclohexanol is obtained by hydrolyzing the isocamphylguaiacyl carbonate, then hydrogenating the resulting hyrolyzate.
