Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an industrial production process for high-purity polycarboxylic acids of trans configuration which is useful as a starting material for polymers in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A polycarboxylic acid in which functional groups comprising carboxyls or substituted carboxyls are arranged adjacently in cis configuration is used as a starting material to effect esterification of these carboxyls. Then, the ester product is hydrolyzed in the presence of a base to effect isomerization into the trans configuration. As a polycarboxylic acid, is cited an alicyclic one. Among functional groups, at least one adjacent couple may be an anhydride.
