To provide a joining method that can improve gas-tightness and water-tightness as well as increasing joining strength, in a joining method in which metallic members are frictionally stirred with each other with a joint member interposed.
This is a joining method in which friction stir welding is performed by moving a revolving tool in a joined metal member 1 that is formed by causing a first metal member 1a and a second metal member 1b to abut against each other, with a joint member U inserted in a hollow part formed therein. The joining method includes: a first joining step of frictionally stirring the front surface A of the abutting part J10 in the abutting part J11 on one side and the abutting part J12 on the other side; a second joining step of frictionally stirring the back surface B of the abutting part J10 in the abutting part J11 on one side and the abutting part J12 on the other side; and a side welding step of welding the side surface of the abutting part J10 at least from one side surface of the joined metal member 1.
