Title:
JOINT DESIGN FOR LASER WELDING ZINC COATED STEEL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2004261870
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
To provide a joint design for laser welding zinc coated steel sheet.
When at least two metal sheets 10 and 20 protected by zinc coatings 12 and 22 of low vaporizing temperature are welded, the metal sheets are placed in an overlapping relationship and a head 30 of a welding machine is passed over the sheets. The head 30 of the welding machine is configured such that a laser 34 is positioned in front of a GMAW welder 36 or a MIG brazing device. The laser 34 cuts a channel 42 into the metal sheets in order to allow the protective zinc coatings to vaporize and escape. The GMAW welder or the MIG brazing device then follows the laser and deposits a material that fills the channel to weld the two sheets together.
