Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a jointed link structure which can be more controllably bent in order to perform a wide range of minimally invasive surgical procedures; to provide a jointed link structure that can be more controllably bent while keeping the overall dimensions of the structure smaller; and to provide a jointed link structure that is robust in design, inexpensive to manufacture, and achieves controlled bending through the use of simple mechanical designs.SOLUTION: A surgical device 100 includes: a first pair of articulably coupled links 110; a second pair of articulably coupled links 120, and a tension member 135 coupled to the first pair of links and the second pair of links such that altering tension in the tension member exerts a force tending to articulate the first pair of links and the second pair of links so as to bend the first pair of links and the second pair of links. The surgical device can be configured such that the first pair of links has a lower resistance to bending than the second pair of links upon altering the tension in the tension member.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
