1504763 Benzofurans and benzothiophenes containing sulphonic acid groups CIBAGEIGY AG 10 June 1975 [12 June 1974 (2)] 24828/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3 and G2] Compounds of the formula wherein the rings A, B and C are optionally substituted with non - chromophoric substituents, X denotes oxygen or sulphur, M denotes hydrogen or a salt forming cation, D denotes a phenylene, 4,41-biphenylene or naphthylene radical which is optionally substituted with non-chromophoric substituents, and n is 1 or 2, it being possible, when n is 2, for two adjacent substituents on ring A to form the completion of an indane or naphthalene ring which is optionally substituted with non- chromophoric substituents, may be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula in the presence of a strongly basic alkali metal compound in a polar, neutral to basic organic solvent, with an acid of the formula where Ar is an optionally substituted aromatic radical. Specified non-chromophoric substituents are C 1-4 alkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, α,α - dimethylbenzyl, phenyl, halogen, C 1-4 alkoxy, benzyloxy, phenoxy, C 1-4 alkylmercapto, sulpho or, in the case of two adjacent substituents, 1,3 - butadienylene, trimethylene or tetramethylene radicals, and specified saltforming cations are alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, NH 4 +, and amine salt ions. The reaction is suitably effected at 10-150‹ C. and specified solvents are dialkylamides of formic acid or phosphoric acid and tetra-(C 1-4 )alkyl urea; the strongly basic alkali metal compound is preferably an alkali metal alcoholate. The acid starting materials may be obtained by reacting an aldehyde with an appropriate aniline derivative, and the product may be reacted subsequently in situ. Amine salts may be obtained by converting an alkali metal salt of the sulphonic acid into the sulphochloride followed by saponification in the presence of the desired amine. The 2-phenyl-6-methylbenzofuran starting materials may be prepared by cyclization of the appropriate m-cresol ethers. Biphenyl-4-aldehyde-41-sulphonic acid potassium salt and 1-naphthaldehyde sulphonic acid are obtained by sulphonation of the corressponding aldehyde. The products may be used to optically brighten a wide range of organic materials and they may also be employed in cleansing compositions.
