The kick starter includes: a kick shaft (170) supported to a transmission case (11) to be rotatable by the operation of a kick pedal (180) mounted at one end; a gear train (123) composed of a plurality of gears and linked with the rotation of the kick shaft (170) in the transmission case (11); a torsion coil spring (176) that urges the kick shaft (170) so as to return the kick pedal (180) to the initial position; and a regulating member (177) that regulates the rotation in the return direction of the kick shaft (170) when the kick pedal (180) is in the initial position. The regulating member (177) is arranged with respect to the kick shaft (170) so as to overlap with the installation area for the gear train (123), secured in the axial direction of the kick shaft (170), in the transmission case (11).
