To provide a knit or woven fabric fully exhibiting the effect of chitin and/or chitosan while keeping the strength necessary as a fiber material by a simple means and provide a method for producing the fabric.
The knit or woven fabric contains a paper yarn composed of paper containing chitin and/or chitosan as a constitution yarn. The fabric may be produced by calendering the paper containing chitin and/or chitosan, slitting the product and knitting or weaving the obtained paper yarn. The method for the production of the knit or woven fabric comprises a step to mix fine powder of chitin and/or chitosan to a paper base in the paper preparation step and form the paper containing chitin and/or chitosan, a step to slit the paper containing chitin and/or chitosan to a thin and long strips, and a step to knit or weave the fabric by using the paper yarn obtained by the slitting step.
