Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a compressed woody material which is excellent in bend strength, surface properties, and dimensional stability and free from a warp and a twist irrespective of its light weight by a method wherein a hard layer is formed on front and rear surfaces by raising specific gravity of only the front and rear part without raising total specific gravity of basic material.
CONSTITUTION: Woody material a water content of which is adjusted 10 a first saturation point or under is put between hot plates, and compressed after heating at a temperature of at least softening point temperature of cellulose being a crystalline component of the woody material and of at least softening point temperature at the water content after adjusting a non-crystalline component. By releasing pressure and cooling thereafter, woody material having a compacted hard layer 2 on both front and rear faces of the woody material is obtained. Waterproofing treatment is applied to a butt end fringe of the compressed woody material 1. The waterproofing treatment can be carried out by sticking fringe sticking material 5 to the butt end fringe or impregnating it with synthetic resin.
