PURPOSE: To cut quickly oxide ceramics to an optional shape with good accuracy by using a laser by coating preliminarily a metal oxide which is decreased in the m.p. by the eutectic reaction with ceramics on said ceramics along the cutting surface thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A metal oxide 2 of TiO2 or the like which induces an eutectic reaction with the ceramics 1 is coated preliminarily on the front and rear of oxide ceramics 1 such as ZrO2 along the cutting line 3 of the ceramics 1 by thermal spraying or the like. Such ceramics is preheated to about ≥600°C in a furnace 15 and laser light 9 is focused by said torch 4 on the cutting line 3 of the ceramics 1. On the other hand, a cutting gas such as Ar from a cylinder 11 is ejected from a cutting nozzle 6. The above-mentioned oxide decreases the m.p. by inducing an eutectic reaction with the ceramics 1 according to the above- mentioned method, by which the fluidity of the melt thereof is increased. The melt is blown off by the cutting gas and the satisfactory and precision cutting is made possible.
