To provide a system employing a Q-switched pulse laser for forming markings on a portion of a gemstone with high positioning precision.
The laser energy microinscribing system for a workpiece comprises: a laser energy source; a workpiece mounting system, allowing optical access to a mounted workpiece; an optical system for focusing laser energy from the laser energy source onto the workpiece; a relative positioning system for direction said focused laser energy onto a desired portion of the workpiece, having a control input; and an electronic imaging system for automatically deciding the relation between the focal face of the optical system and the surface of the workpiece, viewing the workpiece from a plurality of vantage points. Said workpiece mounting system and said optical system lie in relation fixed by a rigid frame, to resist misalignments caused by external vibration during the operation.
