Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a high and flat gain while suppressing noise by an arrangement wherein a pumping light source comprises first and second light sources of different wavelength and the first light source has a wavelength corresponding to the difference between a specific energy level of Er and a higher energy level.
SOLUTION: The laser comprises photocouples 3, 4, an amplifier optical fiber 5 added with Er, an optical isolator 6, and a pumping light source comprising first and second light sources 1, 2 having a different wavelength. The first light source 1 has a wavelength corresponding to the difference between the 4I13/2 energy level of Er and a higher energy level. Consequently, even when an infrared ray transmitting fiber, e.g. a fluoride fiber, is employed as a host of Er, low noise amplification can be realized in a 1.55μm band through so-called 0.98μm excitation. This arrangement realizes an optical amplifier having a flat gain in high band and low noise characteristics.
