Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain novel latent thiol monomers which are provide by a two stage aqueous emulsion polymerization and give novel polymers and graft copolymers useful as aqueous emulsion coating or caulking agents.
CONSTITUTION: The latent thiol monomer containing a polymerizable functional group and a protected thiol group other than a styryl derivative, for example, (S-acety-3-mercaptopropyl)-2-methyl-2-propenoate. The exemplified monomer is obtained, for example, by reacting thiolacetic acid with allyl alcohol in the presence of a t-butyl hydroxide catalyst to obtain 1-S-acetyl-3-mercaptopropanol and reacting the mercaptopropanol with methacrylic anhydride in the presence of phenothiazine and 4-dimethylamihopyridine in THF.
