Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leakage detecting apparatus for an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine for detecting a leakage from the intake manifold with a simple structure and a sufficient accuracy.
SOLUTION: An ambient pressure PA and an intake manifold pressure (absolute pressure PBA within an intake pipe) prior to start of rotation of the internal combustion engine are detected and stored (S10, S14). It is determined whether or not a change between the intake manifold pressures prior to the starting and after starting the rotation when closing a throttle is less than or equal to a first predetermined value P1 (S16, S18) and a change between the intake manifold pressure prior to the starting and the ambient pressure after starting the rotation is less than or equal to a second predetermined value P2 (S16, S20). In the affirmative case, the intake manifold is determined to be subjected to monitoring (S22). In another routine, opening of a secondary air passage is changed, and it is determined as a leakage when a difference between rotational frequencies of the engine prior to the change and after the change is less than or equal to a third predetermined value, and a pressure change of the intake manifold is less than or equal to a fourth predetermined value.
