To solve the problem of LEDs used increasingly as light sources in place of mercury lamps for road lamps, etc. that although magnetic ballasts are used for mercury lamps, semiconductor components are used in many cases for the control power supply of LEDs, so that when LED road lamps, etc. are struck by lightning, for example, the semiconductor components in the control power supply are electrically broken to become faulty.
A lightning surge protection device composed of a surge absorber and a fuse is inserted between a commercial power supply and an LED control power supply. When a power supply line or a ground line is struck by lightning, the voltage applied to the LED control power supply can, in either case, be limited to a voltage set by a surge absorber value in the lightning surge protection device, which an LED turn-on circuit can withstand. Also, when energy exceeding the withstanding capacity of the surge absorber is received, the surge absorber is short-circuited and the fuse in the lightning surge protection device is burnt out, making it possible to prevent the LED turn-on circuit itself from being damaged.
