The lens barrel is capable of varying focal distance by moving a plurality of lens units along the optical axis and in addition of collapsing to a stored state. A retreat lens unit 400 which is one of the plurality of lens units includes a retreat lens 402 retained by a retreat lens frame 403 attached to a fixed section 401 to be rotatable around a prescribed shaft between a photographing position and a retreating position. The prescribed shaft is disposed in a position separated from the optical axis at an approximate right angle to the optical axis as well as being disposed more on a back surface side which is opposite to a front surface side where the subject comes than the retreat lens 402 in the photographing position in the direction of the optical axis.
