Since a scrambler 31 improves the uniformity of an incident light beam by randomly reflecting light made incident from a lamp and has the same square shaped cross section as the aspect ratio of a liquid crystal panel 36, it plays a role to make transmitting light as the shape of the liquid crystal panel 36. An image unit 32 expands a light beam passing through the scrambler 31 and makes it incident on the whole surface of the liquid crystal panel 36. The image unit 32 is composed of a first image lens 33 and a second image lens 34 both having positive powers. A collimator lens 36 is arranged on the optical path between the image unit 32 and the liquid crystal panel 36 and converts a light beam passing through a second image lens 34 and diverging to a parallel beam. The first and the second image lenses 33, 34 and the collimator lens 36 have preferably lens data.
