To provide LiNbO3 glass which is free from compositional variation, is excellent in Li+ ion conductivity, has a sufficiently reduced water-containing phase and uses easily handled material in firing, to provide a method for producing the LiNbO3 glass, to provide a solid electrolyte membrane using the glass, and to provide a positive electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte cell and the nonaqueous electrolyte cell.
The method of producing LiNbO3 glass comprises: preparing a sol solution containing lithium alkoxide and niobium alkoxide in equal mol and an alcohol as a solvent; heating, concentrating and drying the resultant sol solution under an atmosphere having a prescribed relative humidity and at a temperature equal to or below the boiling point of the alcohol to form gel; adding a prescribed quantity of water into the resultant gel and stirring the gel to prepare a sol solution; drying the resultant sol solution to form gel; and firing the resultant gel at ≥250°C and <350°C. The solid electrolyte membrane contains LiNbO3 glass as an essential constituent. The positive electrode contains the LiNbO3 glass in the grain boundary of positive electrode active particle. The nonaqueous electrolyte cell uses the solid electrolyte membrane or the positive electrode.
