PURPOSE: To obtain the stable light attenuator of high response by controlling the opening and closing of a switch through detection of the quantity of incident light with a photoelectric conductor to feed and cut off the electric source power to a solid-state electro-optic effect element thereby controlling the transmittance of the solid-state electro-optic fiber element.
CONSTITUTION: When the quantity of incident light becomes more than the specified value, a switching means 4 is closed by a photoconductor 1 and photo detecting circuit 2, by which electric source power is supplied to the transparent electrodes 20, 30 of a solid-state electro-optic effect element 100. As a result of this, the light scattering mode of the element 100 which is fast in response and is stable in temperature, aging, etc. changes immediately to scatter the incident light and decrease the quantity of the light transmitting through the element 100, thus the incident light attenuator stable to high response is obtained. The similar results are obtainable even by providing a reflecting plate 40 to one electrode 30.
