Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of a photorefractive effect induced by an input of high power light in a light control element using a lithium niobate substrate.SOLUTION: The light control element includes a lithium niobate substrate (102), optical waveguides (104 to 114) formed in the substrate, and electrodes (120 to 124) to control light waves propagating in the optical waveguides, and further includes a substrate temperature adjusting element (230) to adjust the temperature of the substrate. The temperature of the substrate is controlled by the substrate temperature adjusting element to be equal to or higher than a predetermined minimum temperature at which generation of a photorefractive effect by the light propagating in the optical waveguide is suppressed, and to be equal to or lower than 80°C.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
