PURPOSE: To control light distribution in the horizontal and vertical directions most suitably for good visibility by estimating the watching position of a dry bar based on information which indicates vehicle speed, gradient and shape of traveling passage, and computing controlling at least one of the projecting direction and range of a headlamp so as to project the light thereto.
CONSTITUTION: After reading vehicle speed V, an image reading signal is outputted into an image processing device 48. Next, the horizontal position of an image is read to determine a deviation ΔH of the position from a reference horizontal line. After computing a watching distance X and outputting into the image processing device 48, a deviation angle is computed from the watching distance X to compute the light distribution control quantity of head lamps 18, 20 with a fuzzy infefence. The computed value is corrected based on the gradient of a road to compute the final control quantity. Namely, the value is corrected to a position corresponding to the gradient form the position of the light distribution pattern of a light shielding plate 40A based on the deviation ΔH. The light shielding plates 40A, 40B, 40C are moved to control the light distribution of the headlamps 18, 20.
