The light emitting device comprises: a base 1 having a mount 1a on the upper main surface for mounting a light emitting element 5; the light emitting element 5 mounted on the mount 1a; a frame-like reflective member 2 disposed on the upside main surface of the base 1 so as to surround the light emitting element 5 with a support 2d provided in parallel to the upside main surface of the base 1 on the inner wall 2a; and a phosphor-containing sheet-like transparent member 4 mounted on the support 2d. The outer side wall 4a of the transparent member 4 is a slope expanding from the upside to the underside. This allows light to be taken up also from the outer side wall 4a of the transparent member 4.
