To provide a light emitting device capable of sustaining uniform quantity of light distribution in the main scanning direction even if the light emitting surface is brought close to the irradiating surface of a photosensitive material.
A light emitting array 26 for yellow is constituted by arranging large and small light emitting elements 31 and 32 in matrix on a substrate 28. The large light emitting element 31 is a square chip having a light emitting surface of about 1 mm×1 mm and a gap N1 of about 0.5 mm is provided between large light emitting elements 31 in order to ensure a space for connection, or the like. The small light emitting element 32 is a square chip having a light emitting surface of about 0.5 mm×0.5 mm substantially corresponding to the gap N1 of the large light emitting element 31 and arranged at a position substantially corresponding to the gap N1. Since the overlapping part of the light emitting elements 31 and 32 is eliminated in the main scanning direction, quantity of light distribution is not varied in the main scanning direction even if the light emitting surface of the light emitting array 26 for yellow is brought close to the recording surface of a thermal recording sheet 12.
