To provide a light emitting diode with a high brightness which can increase an output efficiency of light wavelength-converted by a phosphor and can increase the quantity of phosphor and a surface area thereof.
In a light emitting diode 10, an LED chip 14 is connected and fixed onto a substrate 12 made of an insulating material, one electrode of the LED chip 14 is connected to one external electrode 16a, and the other electrode of the LED chip 14 is connected to the other external electrode 16a. The LED chip 14 is covered with an unwoven cloth 22 made of many fibers 24 entangled three-dimensionally. A phosphor 20 is carried on the surfaces of the fibers 24 in the unwoven cloth 22, the LED chip 14 and the unwoven cloth 22 are surrounded by a frame member 28, and the LED chip 14 is sealed with a light-transmission lid member 30 formed by filling a light transmission material in the frame member 28.
