A catalyst is obtained by supporting palladium on a refractory inorg. carrier. As the refractory inorg. carrier, an acidic inorg. oxide carrier, an alkaline inorg. oxide carrier and a carbonaceous carrier are used. Only one of these carriers or a mixture of them may be used and a compd. such as silica alumina, alumina magnesia may be used. As the acidic inorg. oxide carrier, alumina, silica alumina, or the like, are used and, as the alkaline inorg. oxide carrier, magnesia, titania, or the like, are used and, as the carbonaceous carrier, carbon is used. A metal as a catalyst is palladium and, as the carrier, acidic oxide such as alumina or silica alumina, basic oxide such as magnesia or titania and carbon are used. The support amt. of Pd in the catalyst is set to 0.1-5 wt.% per wt. of the carrier.
