Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small optical device having a high utilization factor of the light emitted from a short arc discharge lamp.
SOLUTION: This device 10 is provided with a short arc discharge lamp 20 and a concave reflector 11. The inter-electrode distance of the discharge lamp 20 is 4.0 mm or below, and the arc tube section 21 of the discharge lamp 20 is a spherical surface around an arc center A at least in a specific range on its inner surface 26a and outer surface 26b. The specific range is a range that a solid angle having the arc center A as an apex and the optical axis L of the concave reflector 11 as the center axis is at least 3 sr or above in a front region located in the front of a critical straight line D connecting the arc center A to a point Y where the extension line of a virtual straight line N connecting the arc center A to an optional point on the front outer edge of the concave reflector 11 crosses the outer surface 26b of the tube wall of the arc tube section 21. The reflector 11 is preferably formed on the outer surface 26b at least in the specific range of the arc tube section 21.
