To provide a lighting control device for a lamp, the control device lowering the power consumption of the lamp and preventing the lamp from being damaged by heat generated therein.
A lighting control device 1 for controlling the lighting of a discharge lamp 7 includes: a power control part 2 that generates a stepped-down potential by stepping-down an applied potential to thereby control input power; an inverter part 4 that is connected to the power control part 2 and converts direct current supplied from the power control part to alternating current; and a control part 6 that controls the power control part 2 and the inverter part 4. The control part 6 makes the power control part 2 generate a stepped-down potential within such a range that the discharge lamp 7 can be maintained lit, with a predetermined power that can obtain light of predetermined brightness from the discharge lamp 7 as the upper limit, and the control part supplies a drive signal that applies to the stepped-down potential modulation of a frequency that is lower than the frequency of the alternating current generated by the inverter part 4 and of a cycle that is shorter than the response period of human eyes.
