To provide a lighting device, a video display device, and a video signal control method that can provide an image having a high contrast ratio while suppressing deterioration in an image like a level difference in luminance and variance in light emission efficiency of a light source small.
The lighting device 100 is constituted by arraying at least one or more lighting means 30 each having a short-wavelength light source 40 emitting short-wavelength light and a wavelength converting means 50 of emitting visible light in response to the short-wavelength light as exciting light corresponding to a plurality of lighting regions. Then the lighting device 100 irradiates an optical modulating element adjusting the quantity of light according to a video signal with the visible light as illumination light. Further, the lighting device 100 includes a frequency distribution calculating means 10 of calculating frequency distributions of luminance of the video signal by the plurality of lighting regions based upon luminance information of the video signal and a lighting modulating means 20 of modulating the quantity of the short-wavelength light emitted by the short-wavelength light sources of the one or more lighting means 30 according to the calculated frequency distributions.
