To provide a lighting optical system that is easily manufactured and emit an illuminating light suitable for image display by improving speckle noise or spatial light intensity distribution, and to provide a projection image display apparatus.
The system includes a collimate lens 4 as an array direction collimate optical element which emits incoming light from a laser array light source 2 as parallel light within an array face; an array vertical collimate optical element 5 which emits the incoming light from the laser array light source as parallel light within an array vertical face; and an integrator optical element 6 which divides the incoming light into a plurality of luminous fluxes in a matrix form within a plane vertical to an optical axis C, and emits the divided luminous fluxes so as to be overlapped with each other on an illuminated surface of a light bulb 7. The array direction collimate optical element 4 is disposed with a predetermined space Lx from the laser array light source 2 so that diffusive light emitted from a plurality of light emitting points 3 is incident thereon in an overlapped manner.
