A lighting optical system 3 for guiding light emitted from a light source device 1 to liquid crystal panels 2r, 2g, 2b has an integrator optical system 20 which uniformizes intensity distribution of light emitted from the light source device 1 and further equalizes polarization direction thereof, a color separation optical system 30 which separates linearly polarized light emitted from the integrator optical system 20 to at least 3 color light of RGB, a relay optical system 34 which is provided at least one of each color light path separated by the color separation optical system 30 and a reverse optical system 40 which is provided on the light path where the relay optical system 34 is provided. The reverse optical system 40 has a polarized light separating splitter 41 which reflects S polarized light and transmits P polarized light in incident linearly polarized light, a /4 wavelength plate 42 which rotates a polarization plate of S polarized light reflected by the polarized light separating splitter 41 by 90 and a reflection mirror 43 which reflects light passed through the /4 wavelength plate 42 toward the liquid crystal panel 2r and makes the light incident again on the /4 wavelength plate 42.
