To provide a lighting system whereby illumination efficiency is improved by illuminating a specific area with light having a predetermined range of incident angle, and to provide a projection type display device using the lighting system.
The lighting system includes: a light source 10; a collimator lens 20 disposed on one of the light emission sides of the light source 10; and an elliptic reflector 30 disposed on the other of the light emission sides of the light source 10. The collimator lens 20 is disposed such that the position of the front focal point 22 of the collimator lens 20 and the position of the light emitting part of the light source 10 or the position of a virtual image formed by the lens effect of the package of the light source 10 are substantially the same. The elliptic reflector 30 is disposed such that the position of the first focal point 32 of the reflector 30 and the position of the light emitting part or virtual image are substantially the same and also the position of the second focal point 33 of the reflector 30 and the position of the front main point 21 of the collimator lens 20 are substantially the same.
