To provide a lighting system which does not make people in a certain illuminated area feel discomfort, while having the effect of saving energy by detecting human bodies within the illuminated space sufficiently.
This system comprises a plurality of luminaires 1 illuminating a certain area; a plurality of illumination control parts 2 for controlling the light outputs of the luminaires 1; a plurality of human body detecting parts 3 which control the outputs of the illumination control parts 2 by transmitting detection signals indicating the detection of human bodies to the illumination control parts 2; and a detection recognizing part 4 which controls the outputs of the illumination control parts 2 in response to the detection signals output from the human body detecting parts 3. At least one of the human body detecting parts 3 detects human bodies to turn on all the luminaires 1 and to turn off all the luminaires 1 after a certain holding time has elapsed since the start of lighting, the holding time being longer if the number of the human body detecting parts 3 that output the detection signals is smaller than a predetermined value than if it is greater than the predetermined value.
