To provide a high strength low specific gravity steel sheet having excellent ductility, and to provide its production method.

The lightweight high strength steel having excellent ductility has a composition containing, by mass, 0.1 to 1.0% C, ≤3.0% Si, 10.0 to 50.0% Mn, ≤0.01% P, ≤0.01% S, 5.0 to 15.0% Al and 0.001 to 0.05% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and in which the mass% of each component satisfies the following inequality (1), has a specific gravity of ≤7.0, has a structure comprising ferrite and austenite where the area ratio of any phase is the maximum therein, and in which the product TS×El of tensile strength: TS(MPa) and fracture elongation: El(%), satisfies ≥20,000 (MPa×%). C≤-0.020×Mn+Al/15+0.53 (1).
