PURPOSE: To make the device small-sized and low-cost and reduce the power consumption, by storing a character pattern in a line buffer memory divisionally while offsetting the visual field of a photoelectric transducer in accordance with the inclination direction and the inclination angle of a character line to be read.
CONSTITUTION: A character line is scanned and read along this character line by a photoelectric transducer 2, and the photoelectric conversion signal is inputted and stored in a line buffer memory 3 through a visual field controlling circuit 5 for the photoelectric transducer. An inclination angle detecting circuit 6 detects the inclination direction and the inclination angle of the character line to the scanning direction on a basis of the output from a line detecting circuit 4. A line dividing calculator 7 calculates coordinates of division points in accordance with this detected inclination angle. The visual field controlling circuit 5 offsets the visual field of the photoelectric transducer 2 in the form feed direction at coordinates of division points of the character line in accordance with the detected inclination angle.
