The linear actuator 10 comprises a shaft 16 with a male thread section 17, a reduction gear transmitting a rotation of motor 40 to the shaft 16; a nut 19 which advances/retreats by a regular-reverse rotation of the shaft 16 by engaging with the male thread section 17, a moving tube 12 which advances/retreats with respect to a housing 11 by being fixed to the nut 19, and a position detecting mechanism 71 detecting a position of the moving tube 12, wherein a position detecting shaft 73 shorter in length than the shaft 16, to which a rotation of the shaft 16 is decelerated and transmitted, is provided in the position detecting mechanism 71, a striker 75 is screwed reciprocatorily to the position detecting shaft 73, and a pair of position detecting switches 76 and 77, which detect the positions of both ends of the striker 75, are provided near both ends of the position detecting shaft 73.
