PURPOSE: To provide a new water soluble derivative of antibiotic, lipopeptides having antifungal and antiprotozoal activities, having high solubility in an aqueous medium, and effectively used for the prevention and medical treatment of Pneumocystis.Carinii infection.
CONSTITUTION: Zalerion arboricola ATCC 20957 is cultured in a culture medium including mannitol, and an antibiotic of formula I (R' is 5-23C alkyl, 5-23C alkenyl, aryl or the like, U, V and W are each H, OH), which is separated from the culture solution and refined, is dissolved in a strong acid such as trifluoroacetic acid or the like, is reduced by the addition of a reducing agent such as sodium cyanoborohydride or the like, and is phosphorylated or the like, to form lipopeptide derivative of formula II (R1-R4 are each H, OH; R is acyl, phosphoryl, sulfonyl).
